Core prompt: The power of a diesel engine depends on whether there is enough air inflow at each work cycle as well as whether the injection pump and injector are under good work conditions or not. This is an important problem we should consider when dealing with the power failure of diesel engine.

A Cummins turbocharged inter-cooled diesel engine causes series of problems during utilization because the volume of air inflow is insufficient.

This set of Dongfeng Cummins diesel engine was sent to our factory for repairing because of much engine oil and diesel oil consumption, sluggish acceleration, insufficient motivation, and large amount of smoke exhausting. We first carried out a comprehensive inspection on the diesel engine, finding blocked filter core and dirty engine oil due to poor working conditions, inadequate maintenance and too dirty air filter. As a result, the turbocharger rotor shaft was severely worn, the whose axial clearance was over-exceeded, and the end sealing ring and oil catching ring of the turbocharger compressor lose efficacy.

Then we analyzed that the damage of those parts can make a certain amount of oil enter into the cylinder, burn and discharge along with waste gases, which results in the increase of engine oil consumption and disabling of the supercharger. At the same time, it will lead to the lack of airflow. The air-fuel ratio imbalance will make the diesel engine combust incompletely, which brings power dropping and increasing fuel consumption.

According to the above analysis, we changed the parts by rule. After check test, the oil loss was solved, while the power of diesel engine was still inadequate with slow speed and much smoke. So we checked the work situations of injection pump and injector on the test bed, but found no troubles.

We also analyzed according to the condition of combustion, and concluded that the main issue was the shortage of air inflow of the diesel engine. Considering the tests above were in good condition, turbocharger and air filter core was new, we thought the problem may come from the inter-cooler radiator. After examination, we detected the radiator was blocked by the mixture of oil and dust resulted from the dirty air filter and seriously worn rotor shaft of supercharger. Therefore, it brought the shortage of air inflow of the diesel engine, and finally caused the imbalance of air-fuel ratio of the diesel engine and incomplete combustion (much smoke). This is the root of the problem.

Dredging and cleaning the inter-cooler radiator, we test it again and found that everything was normal.

Through the case, we realize that during the troubleshooting for insufficient power of diesel engine, sluggish acceleration and smoke, we should not only check the internal of diesel engine and high pressure oil pump, turbocharger and fuel injector, but also check whether the inter-cooled radiators and air filter are clogged. Meanwhile, we hope drivers can take this as an example, strengthen the vehicle maintenance, and keep three filters clean, so as to reduce unnecessary economic losses.
